Course contents

After an Introduction into the theoretic foundations of the psychological approach towards issues in economics as well as business administration the course will focus on the questions and interests which are most relevant to the participating students. We will first offer a broad overview on:

  • History of organizational and industrial psychology;
  • Paradigms of economic psychology; (Selected topics)
  • Motivation in organizations;
  • Leadership and management styles;
  • Work environment and work analysis;
  • Work satisfaction (focusing on problems of measurement);
  • Work-life-balance: women and their double role;
  • Integration of people with disabilities (physical and mental) in employment; (e.g. Alcohol prevention in organizations).

The students are expected to fulfill:

Lectures: to participate actively in the front lectures; additional readings; preparation for examination;

Exercises: Students with similar interests will work in small groups on the subject-areas in economic psychology which most interest them and prepare a presentation at the end of the course in the second semester (spring 2017).

 

Course objectives:

At the end of the course students will:

  • have a general overview of models, theories, and methods of industrial and organizational psychology;
  • have a general overview of the issues, theories and methods of economic psychology;
  • have an in-depth understanding of selected issues of the field;
  • be familiar with areas of application and occupational fields;
  • know a variety of psychological intervention strategies, mostly in the form of preventive measures;
  • be able to present independently researched information verbally and in writing according to scientific standards.

 

Requirements for assessment and examination:

Lecture: written final examination (on course content and additional readings)

Exercise: Participation in small group assignments, review and preparation of an individually selected and relevant topic area (group-work); presentation of the group work at the end of the course; final term-paper.
